Reflector Research.

How do torches work?

'Modern-day devices most commonly feature LED bulbs. In order for electrons to be produced, the light must have some type of power source, so they’re powered by batteries, which can be either disposable or rechargeable.'

Reflectors.

'The reflector part at the front is formed of plastic and coated with a shiny aluminium layer which bends around the bulb, to direct the rays forward so they provide a steady light beam. This is then covered with the lens; a clear plastic at the very front of the device which protects the glass bulb from breaking.'

The torch I have been using for the experimentations has a screw lens, which would then also remove the reflector compartment. Perhaps by doing this it will produce a stronger beam of light and remove the circle that was being produced in my previous experimentations.

The white reflector worked a lot better in my opinion as there is no reflection shown like the image below. It also doesn’t make the image too bright making it look a bit 'faded', which I think reflects more on the work of Louis Le Prince.

(Bottom -  Silver/Tin foil reflector).

(These images are being projected by the torch without the reflector so there is no bright circle allowing the viewer to see the entire image).

Gel Lens Experiment

Gel Lens Experiment Note

This design did not work as the lens box that I made created a pinhole like effect, it did not show the entire image and so the idea is now scrapped. However I thought it best to include this process as it demonstrates the different ways I have tried to project my images.

Reflector Types Outcomes.

White as a Reflector - White reflectors create a neutral effect. But they are much safer to use in brightly lit scenarios, as they are far softer than silver. It will need to be fairly close to your subject to have a visible effect.

Silver as a Reflector - It creates a neutral effect on your image. A silver reflector is highly reflective, and its effect will be far more obvious than other colours.

Gel Comparisons.

For this part of experimentation, I started testing different types of gel lenses from some swatches to see if any could be used in my projector. One by one I took a note of each number and colour and also described what effect it gave the overall image.

The gel lenses did not work in the way that I had hoped. They were either too subtle or too drastic a colour change that it didn’t make sense to have it, and some blurred the image too much that you could not even see the image itself. Because of this I have decided to not go ahead with this idea, but at the very least it was interesting to see how the different colours changed the image with each test.

Painting the Box

Foil on Box

Light Experimentation.

I did try very briefly to find out if there were any different types of light sources I could use as a replacement for the torch. The one I tried the most was a small LED light as I thought with it being small and compact it would be easier to have it in the box.

This proved more challenging than I thought as I had to remove different parts of the torch and reattach them back together, but this proved to be worthless as the image outcomes (below) were not bright enough and did not show the entire image so I decided to just keep my torch as my main source of light.
